Story telling at it's best - By: Crispin Latymer, 11 Apr 2010
One of the best written & absorbing sailing books I have read. Simple as that.
Captivating read - By: Christopher Murray, 05 Apr 2010
I purchased the book to learn more about the Global Boat Race. The writer manages to tell the story from a perfect point of view; not too much technical details about seamanship & sailing so that the reader doesn't understand, whilst maintaining the story to keep the reader gripped to the very end.
Sailing before technology - By: K.E.C, 17 Mar 2010
I was told "DON'T LOOK AT THE PHOTOS,UNTIL THE END",which was great advice.I even heard of someone cutting them out of the book. And if possible don't read the cover. So you can pretend not to know the ending.
The amazing thing about the book is the incredible ignorance, inability & naivity these gungho sailors possessed. But even expert advice was crushingly inadequate. Badly-equipped, unfinished or simply the wrong boats set off. Sailing has moved on a thousand years, since this voyage, even though the seas are just as lethal.
It is unbelievable that this single-handed round-the-world event was ever devised. It is more unbelieveable that anyone would be brave enough or foolish enough to attempt it.
It is fast-moving, & builds & builds. A difficult multi-strand document, pulled together expertly.
A must for all off shore sailors - By: Ms. G. Hornsby, 22 Jan 2010
I was recommended this book after completing this years Fastent Yacht race & was hooked from page 1.
The storyline kept me gripped & it was even more captivating because it was a true story.
Mad as it may seem, it has made me want to sail round the world even more rather than less!
excellent history of yachting - By: N. smith, 17 Jan 2010
A great story well composed. Could see it becoming a film. The book gave me a history lesson & placed the modern era of sail into perspective. I know a fair bit about boats yet this book filledin many blanks. The title is perfect. If anyone harbours a desire to sail solo non-stop around the world then this book might help one get over it & grow up. That's a good thing. It deserves 5 stars.
