Seen This Around But Now I Own It....WowWowWow! - By: Mr. J. SPENCER, 04 Jul 2010
OK this obviously going to be a very positive biased review!
Batman. Possibly the best DC character around. Every Batman book I read just reminds me why I enjoy reading Batman!
So 'Year One'. What do I make of it? Well....
1.) Frank Miller: Excellent writer & what he does with this story is utterly incredible.
2.) The artwork. Greatin my opinion & there are very few books that compete with it.
3.) The story itself? Well its just brilliant. So there!
Niiiiiice!
Brilliant look at the start of Batman's career - By: Mr. J. CLOKEY, 13 Jun 2010
Frank Miller shows his all as he takes readers through Batman's beginnings as a crime fighter. He looks at the establishment of Jim Gordonin the Gotham police department & using both Wayne & Gordon as Central figures brings Gotham to a real world where people make mistakes, & as such there are consequences of these. The gimmicks are minimal & it really gives Batman the face of reality that has made the recent moves so popular.
Incredible. - By: Veseos, 27 May 2010
Not to be compared to batman films, simply to be appreciatedin its own right, year one is a must-read. Highly recommendable.
Miller got inside their heads... - By: Bucur Radu Daniel, 12 May 2010
...or the characters opened up so that Miller could brilliantly describe them... Bottom line is that this book is very well written. Wayne's & Gordon's path to becoming the main characters of crime fightingin Gotham City is masterfully presented. If you want to know what wasin their heads before becoming Batman & Commissioner Gordon this is a very good book to read. And the graphics can't let you down.
better buy Batman Begins DVD instead - By: Mr. W. H. A. Li, 30 Apr 2010
I think it's a good book for comic book fans, but not for a normal person like me.
First of all, I don't really like the old style artwork done with ink. If you look for pretty pictures, you won't find them here. (but some people do like the old school ink-drawn comics, it's your own opinion)
Secondly, as some other reviewers have said, there is more about Gordon than there is about Batman/Bruce Wayne.
Batmanin the book is relatively a one dimensional character, you already know what he wants to do from the beginning, & it stays the same. (he changed his method a bit, from the beginning when he only wears a scar to a full costume that strikes fear, but nothingin the character actually changed)
If you expect Batman to fight super-villainsin the comic, you won't find any. The biggest fight scenein the book is between Batman & the cops.
I expected there should be at least more about Batman's training, but all you see is him punching some walls & kicking some trees.
So, if you want a cool origin story of Batman, you are better off buying Batman Begins DVD instead.
