Good Finish (but I still want more!) - By: ismarah, 05 Mar 2010
I accidentally discovered 'Vulnerable', the first bookin this series a few years ago. I liked it very much despite its superficial flaws & made sure I carried on reading the follow-ups. 'Rampant' is the fourth book &in some ways it reads like a conclusion to the series, although I don't know if it is. The editing is MUCH betterin Rampant than it wasin 'Vulnerable' & so is the sub-editing. It's not flawless but then Ms. Lane has no army of flacks & handlers around her to keep typos from sneaking in, but it doesn't detract from the story.

Cory continues to rock the world around by acing her practical exams for queen-dom, loving her partners & taking care of things. The story is slightly oddly paced & Ms. Lane seems to have introduced a cypher into the story only to kill the character off laterin what appears to be punishment for ogling one of the man gods. (This will make sense to you if you do read the book - I wanted to try & avoid spoilers). I found this arc slightly odd, almost shoehornedin & the almost casual killing of a human being seemed at odds with the ethos of Green's Hill.

I found it harderin this book to identify with the characters whereas previously I'd very much associated myself with Cory - especiallyin the first book - & I had to sort out afterwards how that made me feel, but as usual with Ms. Lane's book, I read itin one sitting, then re-read it immediately afterwards.

That all said, I'd very much recommend it BUT you have to have read the previous books - this is NOT a stand-alone. I'd also suggest you look up the Jack & Teague & Katy stories so that those characters make sense to you.
Well worth the read - By: Flo Watson, 28 Feb 2010
This hefty (almost 500 page) book is a very enjoyable addition to the "little goddess" series, furthering the story of Cory et al. Before reading this instalment to the saga, it is best to read the preceding novels (Vulnerable, Wounded, & Bound), though the e-stories this author has written about secondary characters Jack & Teague (available through her website) are not necessary reading before tackling this book. Rampant has the trademark Lane orginality (some of it not for the squeamish - witness the tidbit about menstrual blood) & quirky turn of phrase (e.g. "rose at the crotch of a slutty dawn"). Lane is a master at fast paced writing, at making sexual detail interesting, at fully-rounded characters, complex story-lines & at making her colloquial (and occasionally deliberately ungrammatical) style of English work well. All this is good, and, for me the book is a 'keeper'.

However, sadly, although the editing has improved (in comparison with the first volumein the series), there were still rather more typographical errors than one tends to findin a book published through the mainstream press. I also was slightly disappointed, because, although I really did enjoy the book (and definitely recommend it to anyone who likes the 'urban elf' genre as being very good of its kind), it lacked a little 'something'in comparison with the previous three novelsin the series. That being said, I continue to wonder why this author has not yet been picked up by a mainstream fantasy publisher. I have read many worse fantasy novels published mainstream - why not this woman's books? It can't just be the length - there are other long fantasy novels out there. Why are the publishers so blind to this gem?
Fabulous book, worth waiting for! - By: L. Hutchings, 01 Feb 2010
This is a stunning book, continuing the story of Cory, Green, Bracken & Green's Hill.

Cory redeems her counsellor, Hallow, removes a "rival" for Nicky, nearly dies (again), deals with scary vampires, & finds answers to what she thought were purely scholarly questions, amongst many other things she gets up toin this book.

She also matures, & somewhat learns to delegate. Also, that coincidences are no such thing.

I loved it, & after reading the last few pages I'm already looking forward to the next book!
