An essential read for lawyers and a d*mn good one for everybody else. - By: G.V. Bellamy, 23 Dec 2008
I approached this book with some misgivings, fearing the tedious & self- aggrandizing war stories to which many old lawyers are prone, & the lack of relevance of Pommy aracana to my own Aussie experience. Happily, it turned out to be not just well written & very readable, but absorbing, entertaining & frequently amusing. Sherrard QC & his biographer, Ms. Goldman, have shown what a Good Idea it is for a top silk to have a good junior & have successfully condensed a long & illustrious career that covered not only notorious criminal cases but also an array of - again, to my surprise, fascinating - civil cases, judicial inquiries & professional activitiesin & out of England. Many of the names - Hanratty of course, Hain, Stonehouse were half-remembered from the news of the time, & the "inside stories" are engrossing. An essential read for lawyers & a d*mn good one for everybody else.
Fantastic! - By: S. Patel, 09 Dec 2008
This is so much more than a biography. It's a walk through the streets of Rumpole while a wonderful story is told with great style. This book is one of the most enjoyable reads I have hadin a long time. It was,in fact, so good that I was sorry to reach the end of this warm, witty & fascinating story of one man's career that charts not only his life but some of the most interesting legal cases of the last 50 years.
