Excellent for modelling - By: Jude, 03 Oct 2008
I agree that the artist is inspiring & brilliant & photos are good for modelling techniques. But what the book does not cover are practical things like hollowing out, firing or casting the head. And the armature he uses is very basic & would not hold that weight of clay for long! Not for beginners.
Helpful for you who sculpture in clay - By: Lena Wennberg, 17 Mar 2008
This book is a long joyful ride with photographs of an artworkin progress. The author take you along with one female bust from scratch to a ready bustin clay.
Bit by bit you can follow how he model the clay from a slab into a beautiful woman.
I will try to remake this head. The author gave me several new ideas on how to make a facein clay.
Helpful book for the cheramic artist.
Magnificent - By: J. Ward, 05 Jul 2006
Lucchesi has Italian origins & that pervades his sculptural style as well as his methods. Like the Renaissance artists, he begins by modelling the amazing bone structurein clay, then puts the skin tissue over it, finally creating the delicate surface details. Many beautiful photographs move from one minute step to the next. He workedin the USA & that influence is also betrayedin his unique genre. The effect of the book is total... you feel that you have been taken into the secret essence of the ancient process of clay sculpture. A great book... I hope it never goes out of print because it will speak delight & insight to countless future generations of sculptors.

Best book on clay sculpting - By: , 10 Aug 1999
I bought this book (along with several others) while taking a classin sculpture. I found it to be the most informative & inspiring of any source, including my sculpture teacher. Using a series of close-up, detailed photographs, the book walks the student through the steps of creating a clay head. I followed them & made a good (for me) sculpture of a man's head & later a bust of a woman. I went on to make other clay faces, incorporated into mugs & pots. I don't pretend to be a great sculptor but, thanks to this book, I am able to make recognizable sculptures. The excellent directions include how to control surface texture using water & a brush; it is possible to make clay look like skin. If you are struggling to bring clay to life, this book doesn't just tell you how, it shows you how.
