when its good, its very good... but - By: iou10bucks@aol.com, 08 Nov 1999
Song of the silent snow. sounds like something a zen priest would say to you on the roof of the world. i have yet to untangle the title even though i know what the sound is of one hand clapping. never mind... song of the silent snow. it captured my imagination & has some beautiful stories. the opening two stories are magic & i know they have shaped my life some how. then again i probably have read too much into them & hubert is probably chuckling to himself as to how he managed to cause such confusionin my small mind. a must read!
Harry-ific! - By: , 13 Oct 1997
Hubert Selby certainly has a mania for the name Harry. In at least three of his novels, one of the main characters is named Harry. In "Last Exitin Brooklyn", there is also a supporting cast of Harrysin addition to Harry the strikebreaker. Therefore, I wasn't too surprised to discover that every short storyin this collection is about a guy named Harry. Well, different guys named Harry, at least. It's fun to try & imagine that the stories are all about the same guy, but it just doesn't work, I'm sorry to report. Anyway, not as good as "Last Exit", but what is? Overall, a solid collection, with the exception of a couple snoozers, such as "The Sound", a riff on the same subject as Selby's dullest novel, "The Room" (I can't remember if that one is about a Harry or not...). Selby is such a good writer I wish that he had written more than a mere five booksin thirty years of writing. But what he did write is excellent, so why complain? In other words, buy this book.
