Must read - By: Christina England, 16 Dec 2008
A must read for true crime fans. The story is very sad, hard for most people to believe. I feel sorry for both wifes, but still wonder why they didnt get out of their situation sooner. Poor, poor Melissa, it is so sad to read what happened to that child, how scared she must have been, several people around her, but no one to help. May she restin peace. Jesse finally got what he deserved - he was put to death on September 25th 2008. May he rotin Hell.
An extremely sad and grim story... - By: Judith Tyrrell, 04 Nov 2008
I have just finished this book & what an emotional story it was. I cannot comprehend that there are actually people like Jesse Cummings livingin civilised society, he is an evil, twisted paedophile who unleashed years of torture & hell on those closest to him including his 2, yes 2!!, wives & his own children. At times I felt slightly frustrated with Anita for not getting away sooner (it was hard to feel this way about Sherry as she was obviously of low intelligence & did not know any other life) but Anita was from a good family & was highly educated...but I suppose it is easy for me to say as I was not the one brainwashed by a horrible piece of scum like Cummings so I will certainly not criticise her because without Anita selfless actions Cummings could well still be living a free lifein one of the Southern states he liked to move about in...and god only knows how many wives he would now have or how many innocent children & adults he could of raped & murdered. I felt tremendous relief when he was given his life sentence & I almost felt quite smug about it. A great book & Im glad it ended the way it did with the ultimate penalty for this monster.
boring - By: reet, 02 Feb 2008
I have read lots of true crime books & was very disappointed with this particular one. I found it to be repetitive, uninteresting & the authorin my opinion was not particularly insightful. I would skip this book!
Sometimes even God isn't infallible - By: Richard, 23 Mar 2007
The Almighty made a gross mistake when He made it possible for a woman to conceive the piece of filth which turned into Jess Cummings.
This is something which was taking placein the 90s yet its as bad as anything the Germans didin the last War.
It just makes you think something like this is hapenning right now &in a town near you.
The thing is you can't feel any sympathy towards the gullible & naive women who fell into the clutches of this sadist because they had no end of opportunities to end it.No way can the average person understand why some women take this sort of thing-but the onesin this book-and true story-deserved what they got because if they'd acted sooner it would have saved their kids the lives of horror they got.At one stage the women had guns but used them on another person they were ordered to kill!Hard to believe anyone would have done this!
These women were so mindless they allowed themselves to be prostituted-and even here one of them at the truckstop was given a chance to report all the abuse by a more sympathetic punter who was told she had to do what she did by order of her husband-this is what would have happennedin the movies! That the trucker would have returned to the house with a load of his mates & beaten the guy to pulp before rescuing the kids
The real victim was the 11 year old child whose senseless death could have been avoided if one of these women had been to the authorities & had the kids taken into care.It was a frustrating read when you thought about what opportunities they let go by-after all Cummings was absent sometimes for a day.
Thank God I don't livein America where this sort of thing happens on a regular basis
TOTALLY DISTURBING--STILL NOT OVER - By: , 13 Mar 2006
I HAVE READ ALOT OF TRUE CRIME BOOKS.
I HAVE READ ALOT ABOUT HUMAN MONSTERS-HOW THEY WERE CREATED AND THEIR PATH OF DESTRUCTION. THIS MAN EMBODIES THE HOW TRULY DEPRAVED AND TWISTED A PERSON CAN BE.
WHAT REALLY DISGUSTS ME THOUGH, THIS MAN IS CURRENTLY TRYING TO
PETITION THE GOVENOR OF OKLAHOMA FOR A DNA TEST. AND PEOPLE WHO KNOW NEXT TO NOTHING ON THIS CASE IS SIGNING THE PETITION. IF THESE PEOPLE WOULD READ THIS BOOK, THEY WOULD THINK TWICE ABOUT WHAT THEIR DOING. THIS BOOK CAPTURES THE DARK RECESSES OF A TRULY HORRIFYING CASE OF HOW TRULY CRUEL MANKIND CAN BE TO EACH OTHER. I HOPE THIS MAN NEVER HAS A BREATH OF FRESH AIR--MY HOPE HE WILL MAKE HIS DATE FOR EXECUTION.
