Anyone scoring less than 4, go back to reading the tabloids - By: , 31 Jul 1999
This is a well researched, well written book on sports & the "Jordan" era. I don't feel Halberstam missed anythingin the way of information & commentary on the game. Not being an avid basketball fan, I learned a great deal about professional sports & the pursuit of excellence. Too bad for those who came away from this read without gaining any insight into what it takes to be great. The author is a true investigative reporter, intelligent & thorough. Unfortunately, today all it takes to be thought of as great is the right "look" & a flare for writing tabloid type articles.
No access, not much of a book - By: , 24 Jul 1999
The key to this book liesin the final of remarks of Halberstam who acknowledges that he had no access from Jordanin writing this book & clearly hoped for a lot. As a result there is a distance to it and, ultimately, it is little more than a chronology of Jordan's life. I read it because I am a sports fan & thought there might be some "inside scoop" on what makes Jordan tick. Unfortunately, it's not the there & the book is little more than a beach vacation read.
2nd rate Halberstam - By: , 09 Jul 1999
If you are a basketball fan & simply want some some more information into to the life & times of Jordan, enjoy this breezy read. But if you expecting Halberstam's usually articulate & excellent insights into American life as seen through Jordan's life, you will probably be disappointed. As much as I admire Halberstam, his efforts here belongin the ABA.
