Golf, Heroin and Improper Postures - By: K. Campbell, 25 Oct 2008
This is a fantastic book, even if one's not into golf. It reassured me that I was normal: I was getting so obsessed with going to the driving range, it was embarrassing -- I even lied to my dad once about where I was going, because he kept making remarks like, 'Everythingin moderation.' As if it were a heroin addiction...well, I suppose heroin isn't good evenin moderation.

Anyway, the peoplein the book actually slept with their clubs, which I don't do, & built their own backyard courses out of tin cans & dirt (which I can't do, because I livein an apartment).

But, my swing is still erratic. Sometimes I go & can't get the ballin the air, & then men insist on coming up to me & giving me tips, which I've gotten better at politely ignoring. One reason I got really bad for awhile was because I had so many mutually contradicting tipsin my head -- some guy even came up & told me to 'spread my legs.' That just does not seem like a thing you should ever be able to tell a stranger.
Simply awesome - By: Mr. Thomas Derbyshire, 09 Sep 2007
Today I've just come back from Florida. I picked this book up over there purely by chance. I wasin a book store looking for a 'good golf book' to read whilst relaxing. I picked this because of the title of the book, the fact Harry Vardon wasin it (I have heard of him but didn't know that much) & also because it said 'the birth of modern golf'. I started to play golfin my spare time last April & have always been fascinated about the origins of the game.

This book isn't short, but I finished itin under 7 days. Its a real page turner & I couldn't put it down. The author does a fantastic job of bringing the action to life.

Highly recommended ! In fact I've just come back off holiday & found out a film was produced based on the bookin 2005. I'm off to buy that right now !
The start of something big - By: Nicholas Dunn, 11 Jul 2007
When I first started to read this book I wasn't sure of the history behind the story, however once I gotin to it I couldn't put it down. The way Mark manages to capture the real events & characters within the story I was fully engrossedin the event & could feel the excitement of the game. During the final chapters of the book I was totally captivated & felt like I was on the course.

A must read for all golf fans.

The Greatest Book about the Greatest Game - By: Geoff Urie, 16 Apr 2005
The Greatest Book about the Greatest Game, September 1, 2003
Reviewer: Geoff Urie from Paisley, Scotland
Having read widely on all aspects of golf, including classics such as A good walk spoiled, Final Rounds, Golfin the Kingdom, Four-ironin my soul, the Legend of Bagger Vance, the Miracle on the 17th Green, To the Linksland & A Duelin the Sun - to name but a few, I can declare that Mark Frost's book "The Greatest Game Ever Played: Vardon, Ouimet & the Birth of Modern Golf" isin my opinion the most informative & entertaining of all. It brings to life a vital chapterin the development of the game bothin Britain & the United States. For anyone wishing to learn about how the game of golf was playedin the early years this is the book for you.
Harry Vardon is one of the greatest golfers of all time but the general golfing public probably know very little about him & the difficulties he overcame.
Francis Ouimet has always been an obscure name from the past - this book will explain that his standingin world golf was no fluke result.
I thoroughly recommend this book - you will not be disappointed.
For any film makers reading this - If you roll The Natural, Tin Cup & Chariots of Fire together it will not come anywhere near the story of Ouimet versus Vardon !
best sporting event book so far - By: stephen@askeurope., 10 Aug 2004
As the title of this review suggests for once this book matches & exceeds the expectation of a book of this type. This is the account of a truly, globally important sporting event that changed golf forever.
The author sets the event up very skillfully with detailed backgrounds of the all the main protagonists which gives a real flavour of the time & the mood.
Some of the crowd reaction described as the competition reaches it's climax is a reminder of the scenes at the same course (Brookline)at the last Ryder Cupin the US a few years back.
Surely somebody with the necessary skills could turn this into the best Golf Film ever.
I recommend that you do as I intend which is to give a copy to all close friends who play the game, it's a real must read.
