Interesting, not thrilling - By: mssmith1, 31 Dec 2008
This is a good book, & definitely worth reading. However, be aware that there is not a huge amount of "action"in there. Having come to this after reading Sniper One, which is essentially a book about one huge long "contact", this one was a very different read. Many of the incidents described happen to the author's colleagues, & so while that doesn't make them any less authentic, it does take away some of the impact.
On the plus side it is a really interesting book about a little known unit, & the descriptions about how they do what they do (although some of these bits are missing for "security reasons") are well written - exiting submarines for example is a pretty hair-raising experience. The rivalry with the SAS is well described, although obviously only from one point of view.
In summary, worth a read, but not the best book of the genre - for that I recommend CQB by Mike Curtis.
Good Stuff - By: AMW, 26 Jul 2008
Brilliant book, & definitely down to Earth compared to some of the SAS masterpisses that have been published. Haven't come across an SBS title that has topped this yet.
4.5 stars. - By: T. Glover, 31 May 2008
First into action is a brilliant book at times... its drags on at times & it seems like he is consintly trying to prove the SBS is better than the SAS by pointing out there 'flaws' this really gets childish after a while. But for the pro's it is a very detailed account of lifein the SBS & at times you wont be able to put it down... buy the book.

An exceptionally good read - By: S. Baptie, 09 Jan 2008
I received this book as a Christmas gift & finished itin a matter of days. What a throughly enjoyable book, a refreshing break from all those books on the 'other elite force '(SAS).
This book contains a perfect blend of interesting stories, relevant information to backup the claims being made, evident humor & a very appropriate choice & use of language.
A very enjoyable book for anyone who is interestedin modern military history.
