crocodiles and wombats - By: Mr. Stefan M. Parker, 22 Apr 2008
A perfectly delightful book - suitably keptin the greenhouse, the library or on the dining room table, Twigs Way has written an animalistic romp of fauna proportions. No other book like it has approached the concealed subject of gardens & pets, or the eccentric keepers of rare creatures. Excellent learning!
Great book for animal and garden lovers - By: Ro, 21 Apr 2008
I bought this as a present for someone but ended up keeping it.
It is a really fascinating & funny book, extremely well researched. Although, as noted, it doesn't have photographs, the illustrations are very skillful & funny without being twee. It isn't the sort of thing I would normally have bought for myself but I loved it.
A fun read - By: J. P. D. Williams, 15 Apr 2008
This is a fun little book, written with wry humour & packed with bizarre facts & anecdotes. Having bought it for myself I'm considering giving it as a present to several people.
I loved the bear that livedin a gardenin south London - lived that is when it wasn't escaping & terrifying the local populace - & the numerous anti-social pets belonging to Dante Gabriel Rosetti - including the armadillo which tunnelled into his neighbours' gardens. And I now know what a Axolotl is - although still not how it is pronounced. My favourite though is the baboon whose hobby was hurling pet cats to their doom off the top of the tower of a Welsh castle.
Animal Magic - By: Dr Frond, 10 Apr 2008
I very much enjoyed this book. I loved Twigs' dry sense of humour & the tonein which she writes; many of the stories made me laugh out loud.
I have given the book four stars because I think that the illustrations don't do the text justice. It would be even better if there were reproductions of contemporary photographs, paintings & drawings of the animals who are such characters.
For example, Twigs writes about the Courtaulds' ring-tailed lemur, Mah-Jongg, who was infamous for biting people that he did not like. The couple included himin a formal oil-painting of themselves, & there is also a great photograph of him relaxingin his deckchair.
However, overall, this is a great little book, perfect for dipping into.
hop into the summer with this pleasant read - By: Parsleybun, 07 Apr 2008
an entertaining hop, lollop, & boundin to the world of our eccentric pet owners & their pets. A delightful, greatly enjoyable read much appreciated on a spring evening. Animal lovers & gardeners alike should have this as a showpiecein their library; the illustrations alone are worthy of the purchase price; enjoy the read.
