Re: A Good Read - By: Mosschops, 20 Aug 2006
I greatly enjoyed this book & was amazed at the trouble that Paul Chambers has taken to research this tale & yet at the same time present a coherent & compelling story. The gist of the tale has already been outlined by another Amazon reviewer so suffice to say that this book not only tells a cracking yarn about some very disreputable & guilble people but it also paints a wonderful picture of London lifein the 1760s.
Re: Strange but True! - By: David Knight, 27 Mar 2006
Paul Chambers's latest tome is undoubtedly his best so far. This book tells the story of a bizarre scandal that had Londonin uproarin 1762. At the centre is a rather vain & naive young man named William Kent from Norfolk who seems to have had a habit of getting young girls pregnant. Unfortunately for him he managed to impregnate two sisters from the same rich family & fled to London where he underwent a series of adventures that made him more enemies. I won't give the plot away too much, but William eventually found himself being accused of murdering a former lover by a ghost that appeared nightlyin Cock Lane, much to the delight of the London mob. However, the ghost appreared to have strong connections with William's enemies suggesting that it was part of a plot against him. Trying to prove who was behind the scam necessitated the involvement of Dr Samuel Johnson & other luminaries leading to a climatic confrontation.
Chambers treats this true storyin a novel-like fashion, unfolding the plotin chronological order. That said, he still manages to keep it factually correct & does not stray too far into the realm of speculation. The copious notes at the end of the book list his sourcesin minute detail; this is a nice touch & adds academic weight to the book.
In summary, I found this to be an easy & engaging read that was difficult to put down. The story & its cast of eccentric characters are fantastic. Highly recommended.
