Opinion of a paramance newbie - By: Lally, 29 Oct 2008
I mostly read mainstream literary fiction & started reading this on a whim. I guess it was pretty much what I expected, i.e. an episode of Xena with lots of sex thrown in.
It has its funny moments & at least there is some attempt at a plot & character development. The writing itself is unsophisticated but I suspect that most prospective readers are not looking for it anyway. Once I got past my initial prejudices & read the book for what it was, it was quite enjoyable & a quick read. There were some things that grated, though. Firstly, the hero is constantly fixated on getting into the leading lady's pants (for a reason that I don't quite understand). This isin stark contrast to his fits of depression about his curse. Secondly, the leading lady is a sex therapist despite being severely underqualified to give anyone sex advice. Thirdly, the cheese. On this I need say no more.
So if you are looking for some light relief & don't mind a bit (or a lot) of cheese, you could either read this or watch some Xena. The book is not all bad but at least watching Xena takes up less of your time.
Yay, great fun - By: Laura Phillipson, 29 Sep 2007
This was my first Sherylyn Kenyon book, & the reviews had me intrigued. It seemed to cheesy to be true. Ancient Spartan Demi God trappedin a book only to appear when summoned to perform sex acts on his summoner for eternity.
Sounds like the plot of a second rate backstreet porno!
But I put aside my snobbery & went for it, & wasn't dissapointed. Its not the most intellectually challenging work of literature ever written, but its a "ripping yarn" which had me vegged out on the sofa for 2 blissful days.
I loved the characters, loved the fact that Grace wasn't some supermodel with tiny waist massive knockers & endless legs. She's a normal girl who has a loony tarrot card weilding friend who, for a laugh on her friends birthday, gets her to summon Julian of Macedon from an ancient book as her love slave.
Never for a minute thinking it would work Grace goes along with it, only to find a 6ft naked warrior standingin her kitchen fully expecting to spend the next month pleasuring herin every roomin the house.
Grace has been hurt by her vile ex & has no intention of letting Julian fullfill his duties, at least until she has got to know him. Anyway, things get interesting with Eros Athena & several other Gods getting involvedin a great tale that, frankly, I found charming witty & great fun.
I wouldnt hesitatein recommending this to anyone who wants something lighthearted & romantic... with a gorgeous naked god thrownin for good measure. mmmmmm
WOW! - By: Sian Louise, 19 Jun 2007
WOW! This book was amazing!
This was my first Sherilyn Kenyon book & I thought I would start with the first onein case I did like it & wanted to continue reading the others.
This book was just amazing though! The storyline was terrific, the characters were so well written & the writer made you fallin love with them & made u really hope that the curse was going to be broken & that they could be togetherin the end. Also I loved the Greek God characters, felt a bit like watching Hercules or Xena because I reconised the Gods name etc was excellent!
The love scenes were very well written as well, they were hot without being too much & just left you feeling really good at the end of the book.
I have just gone out & bought the next 4in the series but if they are anything like this book I will definately be buying the rest, it was excellent & I would definately recommend reading this :)
im hooked . - By: deep red velvet, 25 Jan 2007
I wont try & duplicate a rendition of the story as A reader has done it very well indeed , it is a book that those who love romance with some erotic & well written love scenes will enjoy. Needless to say , this book blew my mind. After reading historical romances forever, I found the charachters both refreshingly modern but with a historical/mythical base that was the perfect balance for me. Sexy & romantic; I read itin a day. Thanks Sherrilyn for giving me back my joyin reading. Fantastic book. I have already given it to a friend with strict instructions to return it !. I cant wait for the other dark hunter novels to reach my letter box now !.
Definitely one for the keeper shelf - By: A Reader, 29 Dec 2006
When Julian of Macedon, legendary Spartan General & son of Aphrodite was born, both the Muses & Graces blessed him with a face & body women found irresistible. Yet abandoned by his mother & abused by his father; still never having found love, Julian enlisted the help of his half brother Eros to woo a woman. Unfortunately the Gods themselves failed to anticipate such disastrous consequences. Later cursed by another half brother Priapus, Julian finds himself trapped for all eternity as a sex slave; bound into the pages of a book & released only upon the summons of his mistress. 2000 years later the legend lives on with Julian lockedin stasis, enduring never ending thirst & hunger until the next female voice summons him.
27 year old Grace Alexander was badly abused by her ex-boyfriend shortly after her parents' death, leaving the sex therapist very muchin need of some counselling herself. Showing no interestin men, her wacky friend Selena resorts to desperate measures; a sex slave bound into the pages of a book. Mildly tipsy, Grace finds herself performing the ritual required to release Julian of Macedon; never expecting it to actually work.
Released from confinement for the first timein several hundred years, Julian is immediately compelled to try & bed his new mistress; however Grace has no intention of indulgingin casual sex with a stranger & using him as she was so badly usedin the past (no matter how hot he is). For the first time Julian encounters a mistress who wants to explore more than his perfect body; a woman who actually wants to break his curse. Cue Julian's seriously dysfunctional family; a Goddess mother who feels rejected, a half brother who despises him & another who thought Julian had died centuries ago.
This is hot stuff considering Grace & Julian cannot become fully intimatein order to break the curse. Whilst Julian helps Grace overcome her intimacy issues & Grace herself tries to break the curse & introduce him to the 21st century, both find themselves fallingin love. Although dubbed a part of the Dark-Hunter series, this book is easily a stand alone, however Julian does think he spots his best friend Kyrian of Thrace; the first Dark-Hunter we meetin "Night Pleasures". I love SK's books & particularly enjoy the fact we revisit many familiar faces throughout the DH series;in fact two of Selena's sisters end up finding true lovein the arms of Dark-Hunters themselves further alongin this series. If you're looking for a little bit of magic with some almost heart breaking romance, then look no further than this book. "Fantasy Lover" is definitely one for the keeper shelf & a wonderful book you'll find yourself re-reading every couple of months.
