Shallow - By: singh, 23 Feb 2008
Like another reviewer said, this book is just a rewrite of other rewrites. Parts of the book are laughably conspiracy theory-esque, especially the few lines relating to the build up to the events of 1984. Ignorance of the spiritual aspect of the various lineages of Sikh saints & the Gurus themselves seems to be a feature of writers on Sikhism of Patwant Singh's generation, a fault that will hopefully be rectified by the future generations.

Overall a very shallow account of Sikh history sadly tainted by a lack of objectivity on the author's part, & the constant mind-numbing convolutions attempting to blame everything that has ever happened on the Brahmins.
An interesting read - By: Kurt A. Johnson, 18 Feb 2003
In this book, Patwant Singh traces the history of the Sikhs from their beginningsin the teachings of Guru Nanakin the 16th century to the present. This history is in-depth, & writtenin an easy to read manner.

It must be said that this book was written with a bias, but I found it refreshing & passionate. Admittedly, I have no stakein the religious affairs of India, but I do see how a reader of the Muslim or (more so) Hindu faith might strongly disagree with the author's interpretations.

Therefore, I do give this book a somewhat reserved recommendation.

a very knowledgable book - By: , 13 Oct 2001
When I read this book I was moved & amazed. I am a Sikh & this relly helped me understand my culture & roots. Parwant's Singhs passages on the many persecutions & battles the Sikhs have faced was particularly touching & evoked alot of sentiment. The heroics of the Sikh warriors are well documented, especially those of Banda Singh the Brave. But be warned, if you get upset easily you should skip the passages on the awful waysin which Sikh heroes were tortured & killed. A very insightful & thought proving book. I loved it.
An excellent history of the Sikhs - By: , 13 Dec 2000
A very well written book on Sikh history. The research Patwant Singh has done is excellent. He has also detailed the attacks Sikhs have faced up to the present day

A very well written history of the Sikhs. It covers the Ranjit period well, it also details the attacks on Sikhs during the last 15 years
