Bypass the other reviews... - By: Roman Clodia, 25 May 2008
Ok, they're out of date, but this is a real book publishedin 2007 & containing 3 short stories/novellas the fill that gaps between the other Lord John novels.
The first (LJ & the Hellfire Club) is the shortest & is kind of over before it really begins; LJ & the Succubus is set after the novel LJ & the private matter & is set amongst the battlefields of Germany where Lord John has to solve the mystery of a demonic succubus preying on English soldiers while fending off a German countess & dealing with his own sexual feelings for his friend, a German count & fellow army officer. The third, LJ & the Haunted Soldier is probably misnamed but is the most full, set after the second novel LJ & the brotherhood of the blade, it sees Lord John accused of causing the cannon to explode this injured him at the end of the last book & uncovering the conspiracy & corruption that really led to that event.
Fans of Jamie & Clair might be disappointed but I think that with Lord John Diana Gabaldon has reclaimed the imagination that seems to have got stifledin what has now become an overly repetitive series. Here she has a fresh character & a new world to explore & the exhileration is backin her writing.
Personally I think Lord John, an overlooked characterin the main series, is fascinating, enigmatic & sensual. The eroticism, though suppressed, is there far morein these stories than before. Gabaldon isn't a great mystery writer, but her strength liesin creating characters & worlds that he readers want to livein & that's herein oodles. So for a true escapist read, turn off the phone, get out the chocolate & wine & enjoy!
It IS a real book! - By: SerenityO, 02 Jan 2008
I saw the other review for this book & it nearly put me off buying this but after going to Diana Gabaldons webpage I can confirm this is a real book & have no clue what the other reviewer is going on about. I am assuming it is not the actual Diana Gabaldon!
Will post a book review when I have read it.
**Have now purchased it & IS IT REAL!!!!!!!!!!**
If this book actually _existed_.... - By: Diana Gabaldon, 04 Sep 2005
...I'm sure it would be great. Look, you nits (you, at amazon.co.uk), THIS BOOK DOES NOT EXIST. And if it did exist, I certainly wouldn't call it "Prequel" (I ask you).
Some chowderheadin your corporate hierarchy evidently amuses him or herselfin an idle hour by cruising my website, picking up vague mentions of booksin progress,in planning--or merely mentioned off the top of my head--and then posting them here for pre-order! To say nothing of trying to extort money from your unsuspecting customers by "bundling" this nonexistent title (and it's not the only one, either!) with the new upcoming title, A BREATH OF SNOW AND ASHES, which most assuredly _is_ real (and I hope you--you, the readers--all enjoy it).
I've tried to communicate with you as "I am the Author & Want to Comment", but your system won't allow me to do that, unless I enter the ISBN of the book--which, of course, doesn't exist.
So the best I can do, evidently, is to post this "comment" as enlightenment & warning for the poor readers--many of whom have written to me, saying that they're frantic to find my books, "PREQUEL", "WHITE KNIGHT", "SONS OF LIBERTY," & "KING, FAREWELL."
NONE OF THESE TITLES EXIST!!!
In the fullness of time, there _will_ be a volume written, which _will_ be a prequel to the Fraser saga, & likely some of the others--but not now. All right?
