Excellent starting point - By: Ms. C. Bacon, 29 Dec 2008
This book was the first i had read on Paganism. I found it a very enjoyable & informative read. It gives you a good understanding of the different pagan paths, the festivals, & the main principles. It also gives you a useful list of recommended readingin the back.
A good starter - By: Sookie, 17 Dec 2008
I amin the process of learning more about paganism & the different paths available.
This book is a really good read, & guide, for thosein a similar position. It is also good as a reference to go over certain rituals/festivals/traditions, therefore once read it is not wasted on the shelf, left to gather dust.
It is a basic, fun, interesting & easy read. If anything, my only criticism would be that it isn't more detailed & longer although it certainly does what it says on the tin.
I FOUND MY PATH FROM THIS GREAT BOOK - By: Hathor 38, 05 Sep 2008
If your new to paganism, & not sure what path to choose, then this is the book to start you on your way. It takes you through each chapter, eplaining the different paths you can take, some chapters are a bit short, but they do explain clearly & informativly the different paths.
The author clearly wrote this for the newbiesin mind, the best part is the reference section at the end, which details the books, websites etc.. So you can make up your own mind on what path seems more attractive to you, also there is a really good chapter on magic & it's uses.
This really is a superb book, & it's a shame that a lot of authers don't writein this style.
Excellent introduction for the beginner - By: GoodGuysWearBlack, 06 Aug 2007
This little book provides an excellent & very readable introduction to Earth-centred religions for those who have very little prior knowledge. It doesn't go into much depth regarding any particular path, but that's not really its purpose - what it does provide is a good groundingin the 'vocabulary' & broad history of the 'major' pagan traditions namedin the title, & a few of the less widely-practised paths as well. I particularly liked the author's approach to practical exercises - unlike some 'introductory' texts, which assume that the reader is already ready to embark on a pagan path & provide more of a 'how-to' approach, the exercisesin this book are much simpler, more accessible & intended to get the reader comfortable with the idea of broadening his or her own spiritual horizons, e.g. visit a place of worship of a religion that you're not familiar with. A list of contacts for various pagan organisations is provided at the end of the book, which gives the reader plenty of scope for taking the 'next steps'in discovering his/her own path. Also, this book is written by a UK author & the contact list contains a lot of UK-based organisations, which is good for a UK readership.
In summary - if you're already some way along your own path & want some more in-depth information, this probably isn't the book for you. If you're just starting out, or simply looking for general information on paganism, then you can't go far wrong with this one.
Just didn't work for me - By: Cardiff Reader, 11 Mar 2007
Seemed dry & boring. I've considered myself Pagan for many years, mainly because I feel a strong connection with the high level ethos. I'm comfortable with my level of knowledge & the abstract & the feelings they promote for me. I bought this book because I was browsing & saw the very good reviews. Perhaps I'm just not interested enough, but Paganism is so individually interpreted that perhaps the high level is all there is. Once one goes below that it becomes a bit of a mish mash of individual interpretations & beliefs, many of which come across as being a bit childish & far fetched and, so when explained seriously, the whole seems to lack any degree of credibility.
