excellent - By: H. Mckeon, 25 Jan 2007
I really enjoyed this book - one I read long into the night ( & that doesn't happen often ). Plenty of interaction between the two main characters. One to read again for sure - worth getting. It rates as one of my favourites from this author.
Bumpkin - By: Jo Vkowski, 14 Aug 2004
Most of Judith McNaughts books have a poor or innocent girl taken from her family & forced upon some rich rake! The girls innocence is taken away & she's turned into a harpy like creature. I'd rather read a book where the heroine keeps her innocence...But...It had a good story line & it made me laugh, the womenin her stories are always strong & willfull (they have to be to survive what she puts them through.) A good book though.
Something Wonderful is just that! - By: , 02 Sep 2003
This book is one of the best I have ever read. From the moment one meets the heroine, Alex, it is impossible not to love her - She is a tomboy & a survivor, but also filled with fun & honour.
This book made me laugh, it made me cringe, & it took my breath awayin parts. The plot is excellent - I won't tell too much here, because I read it knowing nothing about it, & the unfolding of the story was just perfect.
A touching Regency romance - By: , 06 Sep 2002
"Something wonderful" is a beautifully written, sometimes funny, sometimes touching & a very entertaining tale setin Regency England.Alexandra Lawrence is the main female character who is well-born but poor. She is 17 & very innocentin the ways of the world. She livesin a remote place with her strange relatives, she knows more about Latin & Greek than the gentlemen at Oxford & she dreams about a beautiful love.
Jordan Townsende, Duke of Hawthorne is a wealthy, handsome & well-known member of the ton. He is also bored with his life & the whole of society & his opinion about women is low & full of contempt. These two very different people meet & because of some strange coincidence of circumstances marry, & an interesting, exciting, funny & touching tale begins. Alex is so plane & innocent that society & Jordan's family cannot comprehend why he married her. Jordan doesn't understand himself either but he hasn't got much time. He has deadly enemies who try to kill him & he spents a long timein a French prison before he manages to come back to England. Alex is trying very hard to fulfill her duties as Jordan's duchess. She is heartbroken when Jordan disappears & she thinks him dead. The story gets even more exciting when Jordan returns & he can't believe his eyes to see Alexandra changed into a beautiful woman.
Ms. McNaught is a master story-teller, she knows her characters very well & she describes Alex's change from a naive innocent country girl into a sophisticated & beautiful duchess with rare talent. She is the first to fallin love with her husband & her love is so strong that she never gives up on him. She believes with all her being that "something wonderful" will happen to them.
Jordan's change from a hardened cynical aristocrat into a man who finally realises that he loves & needs Alex is interesting to follow.I like some of the secondary characters too, especially the Dowager Duchess of Hawthorne. Her character is fantastic & she is very real & fully developed.
The author has done a great & thorough research on the era. It seems very realistic & it makes you think about the ton's rules & their doublefaced behavior.
SOMETHING WONDERFUL is an enchanting story bringing many enjoyable hours of reading into the life of historical romance readers. And yes, it is very nice of the author to make us believein love &in the notion that something wonderful might happen to all of us.
Absolutely wonderful! - By: , 18 Jul 2000
I am a huge fan of JMC & when a friend recommended that I read this, I just had to get this book. You will fall instantlyin love with both the hero & heroine - they are both extraordinary characters. There is a lot of humourous moments & sharp wit exchanged between Alexandra & Hawthorne, which will make you laugh out loud. However there are also many tender moments which will touch your heart. I know for a fact that without these stories, I would not be able to keep up my beliefin true love. So well done Judith, & keep the work up!
