Wonderful - By: bookbee, 23 May 2008
A fascinating book, written with genuine enthusiasm. The background to the various types of food is extremely interesting, & the personalisation with stories from Claudia Roden's own life & family brings everything to life.
As for the recipes, everything I've attempted has turned out beautifully despite there being no photographs of the foodin the edition that I own -my only criticism. There are photographs of people, though.
There's a tremendous range of dishes & I've found dishes to suit all kinds of people; vegetarians, keen meat-eaters, lactose-intolerant, plain food fans, lovers of spicy exotic food.
I love this book so much that I've bought additional copies as gifts for friends, as well as recommending it to everyone.
The Book of Jewish Food - By: Fifi, 11 Jan 2008
This book is one of the few cookery books I force on my friends as a gift for any reason. It is so wonderful I cannot imagine living without it. Having something for everybody, (vegetarians, those who like exotic food, those who like plain nursery food) everything recipe works. I have never cooked a dud from this book & even use it frequently for bed time reading. The background section is so interesting & varied, the photos fantastic, that I will continue to buy it for friends & family for as long as it is available.
the most comprehensive book on food I have read - By: , 27 Oct 1998
This is one of the greatest food books ever. It's not just a cookbook, but an ethnographical acount of Jewish life around the world - all tied togther by food - the single currency that makes sense of our lives. I read the book from cover to cover & then i cooked from cover to cover. The most beautiful book, I am truly inspired. There cannot be many books (on food or otherwise) that can compare.
