This book is one of the easiest to read computer books ive read. It gives you a good foundation on using UNIX which can be extended using online resources. Unlike the other reviewer i find the examplesin this book easy to follow & useful. I would recommend this book to anyone that wants to understand more about their mac & UNIX.

This book is far from perfect. Best way to describe it is "How To?" sort of guide. It is not consistent, not really logical & examples are sort of 'cool', i.e. can be funny & even useful but don't give you real understanding of what you're doing untill much too late.
I wouldn't recommend it as Unix guide. There're much better books to spend your money on if you want to 'use' Unix layer of Mac OS X, not just 'play' with it.
THE book for learning about Unix within Mac OS X - By: Ali Amir, 18 Apr 2006 Before reading this book, I had very little knowledge regarding the Unix side of my Mac but now I know how to wield the Terminal application with ease & confidence. It teaches you how to use the command linein a way that not only allows you to read through it like a step-by-step tutorial, but alsoin a way that allows you to jump about the book if you ever need to learn specific topics immediately. It's extremely detailed & informative, considering it is a book for total Unix beginners, & it also gives you information on how to continue learning about Unix as well as how to begin learning things such as shell scripts & programming languages, such as Perl, Python, Ruby, C & C++.
Allin all, this is an amazing book that you will not regret purchasing. If you need somewhere to start learning about Mac OS X's Unix underpinnings, & how it can help you, look no further; you have found the perfect book.

This is a very good intro into UNIX. The fact that it deals with OS X UNIX is almost incidental. Recommended for just the audience the intro suggests: folks who are AOK with the GUI & want more power.
Very friendly book, appealing OS X UNIX introduction - By: Jeff G., 30 Sep 2005 OS X UNIX is amazingly friendly & accessible. Some people who had never used it before type commands & work with the operating system directly as a "cool guys"in movies! This book is very helpful & well written & it is serves as a very nice reference. I paired this book with that "UNIX Essentials" DVD(it sells on Amazon.com but they do not ship UK so I ordered it from Customflix directly) & it is complete UNIX course recorded & this book & a video they contribute one another greatly. The book is very particular about the subjects that related to OS X & because there are some differences between OS X & other UNIXes it is nice to have a book that deals with it. Overall it was very enjoyble & rewarding reading. I also enjoyed "OSX for UNIX geeks" book that sells here on Amazon as well, it is like a second part of a novell. Have a fun with OS X !
