The softback copy of The Third World War: The Untold Story - By: Adam Welton, 21 Aug 2004
As a former British Army soldier who served during the height of the cold war, this book was a very good view of the traditional "what-if" historical fiction. It is a highly detailed look at how history might turn if the cold war had turned "hot", & the long-awaited but most definitely unwanted east-west conflict had broken out. The 1983 softback copy is slightly differentin ending to the previous hardback copies of both 1978 & 1982. There is an alternate end to the alternate history,in which we briefly see how Britain might suffer from a Soviet victory over NATO (as a result of the trendin falling defence spending). This certainly makes the original end a lot more enjoyable. Having seen a good european-made fictional film on the same subject, it adds a footnote to how close we got to our utter & endless subjugation to a system that made the Nazis seem like traffic wardens.
One of the best books I have ever read. - By: , 20 Feb 2003
As my title says this is one of the best books I have ever read.
Gen. Hackett & his team create a very plausible scenario for a war between NATO & the Warsaw Pactin the ealy 1980s.
While we are shown the grand strategy & background to the conflict, we are also putin the place of thosein the front line, which is something I especialy liked.
While the conflictin Germany is central to the story, the peripheral conflictsin places like the Middle East & Africa are not neglected.
The documentary style (as if it was written just after the war) & the history book style references to extracts taken from other accounts of the war make this a very realistic read.
Anybody interestedin alternative history/future history books should get a copy of this book. Moreover it is best enjoyed along with the sequel The Untold Story: The Third World War, by the same authors.
