How is this man not more famous - By: Ms. K. Booth, 19 May 2008
I actually got funny looks on the train to work reading this as I was genuinely crying with laughter!
Absolute genius - more please. And do some stand upin the UK!!
Not as consistently funny as expected. - By: Lovetoread, 01 Sep 2007
I'm a fan of Hall's humour & I could hear his voice as I read the stories. The chapters can be hit or miss, but overall the book is funny with some perceptive comments about Brits & Americans. I particularly enjoyed the chapters on Aberdeen, New Zealand & ladders. An easy read, one for dippingin & out of.
Sheer Genius - By: , 22 Nov 2005
Can't believe this book doesn't have an overall five star rating yet. There is no book I have ever encountered that I know I can return to with confidence knowing I'll laugh every single time.
The book is pokes fun at all & sundry - British, American, New Zealander, estate agent, Aberdonian, Rich's "family", Neil Diamond, Bill Gates, crypic crossword fanatics... no one is safe. Perhaps the only drawback is you can't escape the feeling that even you the reader are being made fun of while reading it. I guess life is funny, it just takes someone like Rich Hall to point it out sometimes.
I think David Letterman's quote on the back sums it up:
"We say a lot of people are funny. He's the real thing."
Genius. Buy this book & never use a stepladder again!
Is this for real? - By: A. Marczak, 27 Jun 2005
This book was not what I was expecting. I wasn't expecting to see short stories, & it was a couple of essaysin before I got my head around the fact that they might not all be factual. I couldn't get my head around that mini nuclear plantin the garden.
Once on his wavelength, this is a comedy book. His observation that you can buy a gun anytimein America, but can't get a beer unless you join the local members club, really makes him dislike certain parts of his own country.
Readin bits, readin one sitting, just make sure you read it.
Nightmare Journey into the American Dream. Like - By: , 21 Dec 2003
A very, very funny book. Most of it you can really relate to (estate agents, suburban boredom & nuclear powerstation operation) other things you can only dream of (drinkingin Utah).
I've seen a little of his humour before on TV, but felt I'd give it a bash after reading most of itin the book store. It was definitely worth it. The bite size stories are off centre with a slant that will make you think whilst you imbibe.
Oh, & his review of Aberdeen is spot on. Like.
