A good story but a bit of a let down in the middle. - By: Chelli, 15 Aug 2008
This story starts off with a happy childhood that turns to tragedy when her parents try to force her into an arranged marriage, more concerned about keeping up the family's honour than caring about their daughters' happiness. That part of the story is very poignant & captivating & I felt a lot of sympathy & understanding for her when she ran away & was disowned by her family.
But then I lost empathy for her through the middle of the book as she wallowsin self pity & makes one bad decision after another when good options were open to her.
However, she redeems herself towards the end of the book when she works tirelessly to set up a charity to help other womenin her position & highlights the problems facing Asian womenin Britain today.

I had heard alot about this book, so i thought hey why not give it a try. usually with books i'll read them & thenf roget about them.. but this one i could not put down. Jasvinder made this book what i was it was reallllly goood.i love what you did with ur life because not alot of women would have been able to have the strength u have but allin all this book is the best book i have readin a long time.
ABSOLUTELY TOP MARKS FOR THIS BOOK. - By: Leeds lass, 15 Apr 2008
I see another reviewer says she is also asian & not all asian families treat their girls this way. The writer is not generalising, she is telling us about her own experiences, her own life. This is an extremely sad & harrowing story, & it certainly opened my eyes. The writer is a very courageous girl to actually put pen to paper & let the world into such dark secrets. I was shocked by this book & view certain things very differently now. Interesting that the two main `objectors` to this book are asian......one of them certainly doesn`t want us to read it.
Anyway, well done jasvinder.

Shame.....about the book I mean - By: Shanara, 20 Dec 2007
Shame, was perfectly titled. It really was a shame. After reading the reviews, I couldn't wait to get my hands on this much hyped book. However, once I actually got into the painful-to-read-and-stay-interested journey of the author, & started to enjoy it, I realised I was near the end of the book. In a matter of moments, I had finished.

I have always had one rule. No matter how bad a book is, finish it till the end. I had to keep reminding myself of this said rule as I tortured myself through the pages, of this 'woe is me' novel.

I sympathise with the fact that the book was based on the authors life, making it something worthy of value, but even that being said, it was still a bad book.

I am a major book fan, & can read anything until the cows come home. For this book, I struggled to stay awake with this somewhat immature writing from Sanghera, as the text was predictable & her actions very questionable. Coming from an Asian background myself, I can easily relate to Sangheras upbringing, however the bookin itself doesn't do it much justice. The writing is poor & donein a childish manner. Sanghera could have easily wrote about how the changein her life, from nothing to what she actually attained,in more detail, rather than concentrate on her family ties & the resentment she felt towards her first husband because of his family ties. The details that would have made the book a 'good read' were instead replaced by a depressing undertone, which became somewhat of a nuisance. Her portrayal of her life to me seemed, like I have said before very childish. I also felt the women she portrayedin her novel had a 'harder' life & were much stronger than herself, as her 'story' came across weak, compared to the young woman who had been raped etc.

The writingin itself was weak, her failure to grasp the readers attention [asin me] & her continuous futile attempts at reconciling with her family, which made me scream at her to please-for-the-love-of-god-stop-don't-you-ever-learn? made this bookin my opinon, a poor example of modern literature.

On the up side, the ending of the book is quite good. If she wrote the entire bookin this manner & with this uch enthusiasm, it may have been a worthwhile read, rather than me thinking, I will never get those five hours back.

Overall; if you want to read this book, library is my best option. DO NOT buy this book, you will never read it again, & you will be bored. 3/10...
