Full of promise but dissapoints - By: Mr. JC DICEY, 07 Jan 2009
An engaging read but the end sucks...just kind of flops.
I've read & enjoyed all of Grisham's books until a few years back - I won't be buying another one based on this one.
What a shame - I really used to like his books.
Fascinating sub-plot - By: freedomrulesok, 06 Jan 2009
I found this an intriguing novel because of its sub-plot.
Other reviwers can tell you about the David vs Goliath story, but what I found most interesting was the Christian background to this novel. More, what kind of Christian & so what?
On one side you have the local community Christiansin their local community church, they're working class, poor, but are committed & faith-ful, trying to make a difference. They live & work for each other & the peoplein their community, they fight injustice & care for the poor.
On the other hand you have the suburban middle-class Christians, married, 2 kids, respectable job, church & sqeaky clean. They live & work according to what they're told, backing gun ownership & homophobia.
I suspect Grisham is taking a swipe at the Christian Rightin the US, & asking the question - which is Christian?
Grisham now past his best - By: purrdey, 31 Dec 2008
Grisham doing what he does best? Er, I don't think so. I've read ALL his legal thrillers & this is only a pale shadow of classics such as The Firm, Rainmaker, Client, Time to Kill etc. If they make THIS into a film, then I'll eat my paperback copy. It is entirely formulaic & the whole book was excellently summed upin the Short Attention Span Summaryin these reviews (I must remember that device!). But the book's sting-in-the-tail (tale?) is that there IS no sting-in-the-tail! Perhaps he just got fed up of writing it?
Not bad, not great - By: J. Bowditch, 27 Dec 2008
I finished reading the book about 15 minutes ago after having been reading it for around 3 days. It is certainly not the greatest book. It has 500 pages & until around page 150, I was really bored, but I realise obviously that a writer has to set the scene. I read on with hope that the rest would not be as boring.
Whilst it is not such a great thriller,in that it is not really a page turner & exciting, I like the way Grisham writes. Also, the main issuein itself was intriguing - that of a public vote to elect Justices for the Supreme Court of Mississippi, politicising the judiciary, which brings up many issues, & having studied law I find the legal issues brought upin this book quite interesting. Other issues that are interesting are the questionable views of the majority of the peoplein Mississipi as portrayed by Grishamin that they are against gay marriagein the name of Christianity & other views that you don't seem to come across everydayin Britain - like their obsession with owning guns - & it is interesting to compare our culture with theirs.
I have not regretted reading this book, it has not been a waste of my time -only spending three days on it & I got it half price, but at the same time, I would not recommend it as there are many greater books out there including other ones that Grisham has written. But if you are interestedin certain above mentioned issues, then I recommend it.
Big Disappointment - By: T. Kitching, 20 Dec 2008
If you've never read a Grisham before - DO NOT start with this one. I can normally read one of hisin an afternoon but I've been picking at this one for a week & have just completed it. It's slow moving, not much going on & the ending SUCKS big time.
