This book can teach anyone who is willing to go through the exercises to draw. It won't teach you to be an artist ie to come up with drawings out of your head but it will teach you to copy realistically what you see before your eyes. Within weeks days or possibly hours you can turn from drawing like a five year old to drawing like a pro.
The author says that anyone who can write can draw & proves she is absolutely right
Expect unbelievably amazing results just by practising a few simple exercises

I bought this book as was advised to by my university tutor.
I did find some of the techniques useful & it does make you think differently when drawing. I personally think this book is useful to people of all levelsin drawing because the book is full of many useful tips, The only down point is that some of the techniques are rather dull. But then again no pain no gain.
You'll surprise yourself - By: Big Ger, 02 Jul 2007 I bought this book when I decided to start an art class. On the back cover & inside the book (pages 18 to 20) are before & after drawings by pupils on a 5 day course learning how to draw using using the techniques that this book is based on. They are all self portraits - some are quite good to start with but an equal number are pretty lousy, however, ALL the post instruction drawings show a huge improvement ranging from good to excellent. Cynic that I am, I showed these pictures to my friend scornfully saying "I don't belive that, do you?". I had to eat my words. Simply - the book works. Once you realise how to "tapin to the right side of the brain" its like learning some fantastic secret - ANYBODY can learn to draw & learn quickly. Try the "upside down horse" - you'll impress even yourself!!

I bought this book & it's accompanying workbook but found the exercises rather tedious. I had a nagging feeling at the beginning when I realised I didn't like the style of the post intructional drawings as much as some of the pre instructional ones as they lacked a certain charm. And then when I realised I preferred the results & the process of my pre instructional work too I decided that the book & her style of teaching were just not right for me.
It seems that for a book which promises to help you to use your creative side it's rather technical & doesn't seem to encourage expression.
By far the best book on drawing that there is - By: Roger, 30 Jun 2006 Quite simply, this should be the first 'teach yourself to be an artist' book that you buy. It addresses the basic reasons why people go wrong, & teaches you how to overcome the problemsin a very clear way.
For example, tables normally have four legs of equal length, colour & shape. But drawings which depict tables like this are usually unrealistic & confused. You need to draw what you see - & not what you 'know'.
The book starts off with too much theory, & it can be a bit repetitive, but the improvementin one's results is astonishing.
I got the bug to start drawing & painting, & soon had bought 10 books & borrowed another 10 from the library. When I opened this book, I realised that I only needed a couple of technique books to supplement it. So, many of my purchases are now on their way to eBay...
