Nick Hornby's confession of his Obsession is Delightful! - By: , 10 Jun 2002
First I want to state up front that I am not a football fan, so when I found out that the book was about football I had no desire to even pick it up, but I kept hearing such wonderful things about the book that I finally broke down & started reading it. I must confess thatin the first couple of pages, I had the typical "girl" reaction & I was convinced that I was going to never pick this book up again, football....blah....blah....blah.....but then I really got it..... It's not about football, it about his obsession with football & all of the thoughts, actions & reactions that go along with his obsession. After a few more stories about his "obsession" I started to realized that this book could be applied to any boy, guy and/or man that I have ever known! I couldn't stop laughing nor could I put the book down! Nick Hornby's honest & hard look at his life-long obsession with Arsenal, or perhaps more to the point.... his analysis of his life & how it has possibly caused this obsession is a total delight to read! Then, once I realized that Nick himself reads the Audio Book version of the book, I just knew that I had to hear Nick Hornby's own voice tell his story - I have truly enjoyed every second of the book & the tape, several times over!
Own Goal - By: , 22 Jan 2001
Can't see anyone enjoying this book. As an ardent football fan, the media/PR people have led me to believe that this book is a must. Unfortunately, i fell for this... Even for a football follower, this book is tat. It's so boring it's more like a Rothmans Year Book than a novel. If you are not into football, avoid this book like you would avoid dark back streets after midnightin Harlem, NY. You will hate it. It's gets 2 stars purely & simply because i finished it & didn't chuck it away - but this is more to do with the fact that i didn't want to feel i had completely wasted my money.
